Stop Motion Animation
As part of the A-level photography specification, you have the option to include elements of animation and film. Whilst this is not something that we'll focus on, stop motion animation is something that could get you extra marks if it supports your ideas and enhances your concept.
Stop motion animation is basically a series of images that are pieced together to animate them. In photography, this could be: - a burst of fast shutter speed photos to capture a movement - a photo taken every 10 minutes as the sun is going down - a photo taken ever 3 seconds to document a process or change that is happening. |

Task 1: Take 50 photos and make an object walk across the screen! Task 2: Take 50 photos of a body movement. Aim to make it loop. Top tips: - rest your camera on the table so it doesn't move - the more images you take the better (and longer) your animation will be. - make SMALL movements each time you take a photo in order for it to look more realistic! - look at where the previous image was before you take the next one! Export your video then email it to me to share! [email protected] :) |
The Brief: Narrative (story telling)
Develop a short story on a theme of your choice and communicate it through stop motion animation.
- Be as creative as you can - the content is completely up to you.
- You will create an animation each but may need to help each other
- You are aiming for your animation to be 15-20 seconds long

Task 1: RESEARCH and PLAN!
Carry out research into ideas for an animation to respond to the brief. Plan out the story you will tell on paper (or with a graphics tablet) in a storyboard style!

Task 2: PHOTOSHOOT - Lesson 5 plus Homework/frees
Take 70+ photos in your frees OR outside of school, linking to what you planned previously.
Upload/bring in for next lesson.
Tips for success with the photoshoot:
- take LOTS of photos!
- if your camera has a burst feature, use it, then maybe choose every other photo to animate.
- slight changes between your photos will mean a more fluid transition and show movement effectively
- use a tripod and move the subject matter for continuity.
Task 3: EDIT
Apply what you have learnt previously to create an animation that tells a narrative.
See above for settings.
Task 4: UPLOAD AND REVIEW
Upload:
1. your test video
2. your story board
3. your video to your Experimental Photography page using a HD Video Block, with a clear title, along with your planning and photoshoot and review:
- What are the positives of this technique? What might it be good for in the future?
- What are the negatives or limitations to the technique?
- Explain the idea behind the way you have responded to the brief. How would you move forwards from here?

Create one final stop motion video INDEPENDENTLY on the theme of 'A Journey'.
Google some ideas before you get started, it could be someone's feet walking, looking out a car window, going past street signs etc.
It should be around one minute long... so plan properly before hand! And be creative!
Due next lesson.
