Independent Choice

From here you will make a choice between either Mood and Atmosphere or Pattern, Symmetry and Reflections. This will be your focus for the rest of the project. 

This task focuses on AO1 - artist research. You know how important it is to choose the right artist, so think carefully! Their work will inspire all of your work from here...

Choose ONE artist from your chosen list. You will find the second artist yourselves later.

Mood and Atmosphere

Pattern, symmetry etc.

Mikko Lagerstedt
Choose this artist if you are planning to photograph atmospheres in landscapes. It will be ESSENTIAL that you visit interesting locations at different times of day if you choose this topic.

Jonas Hafnar
Creates soft portraits and a dream like atmosphere/quality in his photographs. They often feature shadows through fabrics casting shadows (so you could use this artist for either project depending on which images you focus on)

Alfred Hitchcock
Hitchcock is a film director who directed films with a lot of tension, and was very good at creating a mood or atmosphere. Use this person if you'd like to explore the idea of creating a set and/or scene in your photography.

Jacob Sutton
Sutton creates soft portraits with lots of negative space and a dream like quality, encouraging the viewer to question what is going on in the picture.

Martin Vlachby
A surreal approach to capturing a mood or atmosphere. Often featuring vast landscapes and figures, with low contrast and lots of grey tones.

Adam Pizurny
Pizurny casts high contrast pattern shadows onto faces, with close up compositions, by using a projector.

Mads Perch and Gemma Fletcher
'Projections'
These artists project colour and patterns onto the body with high contrasting backgrounds. You would need a good model and to use a projector for this artist!

Kim Pimmel
Choose this artist if you can control shutter speed on your camera at home, and if you would like to explore more light painting techniques to show pattern.

Darek Grabus
Architectural Cutlery
This artist photographs every day objects with effective lighting to cast shadows that create shapes to give the objects new meaning or new interest.

Horst P Horst 'Botanicals'
This photographer photographs nature then repeats and rotates the image to create stained glass window/kaleidoscope type patterns. This could be applied to different subject matters.

Your task is to write a paragraph about the work of your chosen photographer to anaylse the way they photograph your chosen subject. You should include:
- 3 photographs of their figure photographs (not photos of the artist!).
- key information about their work from the things you have read about (not the photographer but the work itself)
- Your own observations of the photography techniques and formal elements that you see - eg. how does the photographer use composition, lighting, line, shape, tone etc?
- What you think the work is about - what does the photographer want you to think about? What might the meaning behind the work be?
- Your opinion and explanation of how you will take inspiration from their work.
