Introducing Barbara Kruger
Barbara Kruger (born January 26, 1945) is an American conceptual artist and collagist associated with the Pictures Generation. She is most known for her collage style that consists of black-and-white photographs, overlaid with declarative captions, stated in white-on-red Futura Bold Oblique or Helvetica Ultra Condensed text. The phrases in her works often include pronouns such as "you", "your", "I", "we", and "they", addressing cultural constructions of power, identity, consumerism, and sexuality.
'Your Body is a Battleground' was meant for the pro-choice march on April 9th, 1989, in DC, the portrait is now used mainly to voice the artist’s own opinion about gender inequality. The piece is much more relevant in today’s society, where it controls the way we view and treat women’s bodies. Kruger is quoted in the book “Love for Sale” saying that her work is inspired by stereotyping, a “domain as that of ‘figures without bodies.'” And in this artwork, the artist depicts how women are stereotypically viewed by society – the woman is a product of society and no longer an individual. https://publicdelivery.org/barbara-kruger-battleground/ |

Exploring Typography
Find an interesting quote (at least 8 words) about beauty. Or if you'd like to, you could write your own short statement. Something that is close to your own beliefs about how it is seen in current times.
Demonstrate the power of typography, by writing the quote out 5 times, each in different ways so that it is read differently in each image. See below for examples.
Vary:
- font style
- font type
- justification
- use of bold/italics
- font colour
- position and direction of the words
- decorative items around the words
