Your new project: Distortion
Following the news of the school closure, we have made the decision to move on to a different project which is suitable to photograph from home. This project will allow you to be really creative with some simple ideas which everyone will have access to, photographing ice, water, food, nature and objects.
Create a new page on your website called 'C1: Distortion'.
Create a new page on your website called 'C1: Distortion'.
This lesson, research 'Distortion in Photography' and create a collage of images that inspire you, which you could possibly work in the style of later in the project at home.
Add key words to your research to describe the different types of distortion that you have included.
Upload this work to your new Distortion page.
**Please note that 10F will be supported by Mrs Crawford in order to spread out the responsibility as Mr Field teaches so many year 10 students. With this in mind, can this group please start using my website, as you will have all of my up to date lessons and contact forms etc. www.photographywithmisswilson.weebly.com
Please email all questions and work to me and I will get back to you as soon as I can with feedback.**

Task 1: Artist Research
Read this page and look at the work of Suzanne Saroff: https://www.thisiscolossal.com/2018/01/foods-distorted-through-liquid-and-glass-in-photographs-by-suzanne-saroff/
Create a research page on this artist (or do it directly onto your website). Include images of her work and an analysis using the questions below to help you. ONE PARAGRAPH is enough, and the most important part will be your opinion! Add this to the top of your distortion page. |
Task 2: Photoshoot in the style of Suzanne Saroff
Watch the following tutorials for tips when taking photos of still life.
Upload them to your distortion page on your website in a gallery when you are finished, under a title 'Photoshoot in the style of Suzanne Saroff'. |
Your next task is to take 20-30 photographs of distorted food through glasses of water in the style of Saroff.
To do this, fill 4 or 5 glasses of water at different heights, then place them on a plain background. If you can use paper or a white sheet this would help later when you start editing. Place your food behind - colourful fruit and veg will look best, but whatever you have is fine. Make sure you have plenty of natural light! Move your food/glasses around every couple of photos so that you have a variety of images. Change the food/glasses if you can half way through. GOING FOR GOLD: if you enjoy taking photos and/or you are aiming for the top marks, after doing the photoshoot, try another version, this time with slightly coloured water (with squash!) and/or food in the glasses like the artist. Upload these into a different gallery under the previous photoshoot with the title 'Gold photoshoot'! |
A note about photoshop!
You can edit your photos using the school photoshop package via medhurst here. To be honest, it can be a bit clunky to use, so if you are struggling with it, try some of these alternatives:
https://www.adobe.com/uk/creativecloud/plans.html?plan=individual&filter=all - You might choose to pay for photoshop at home - it is around £10 per month.
FREE options:
https://adobe-photoshop-express-windows-10.en.softonic.com/download (slightly limited but better than nothing!)
https://www.gimp.org/ - Fairly advanced like the photoshop we usually use. Lots of tutorials at the top of the page including the basics: https://www.gimp.org/tutorials/GIMP_Quickies/

Task 3: Editing your photos
Using photoshop (via medhurst or the photoshop link you have been emailed - or any other editing software you have access to):
Edit TWO or more of your best photographs to enhance them in the style of your artist.
Upload your photos - full size - under your photoshoot. Add a sentence below to explain HOW you created your edit, and explain the strengths and weaknesses. What is good? What could you do better and how? |
Task 4: Artist Research
Read this page and look at the work of Bruce Boyd: https://www.thisiscolossal.com/2018/01/foods-distorted-through-liquid-and-glass-in-photographs-by-suzanne-saroff/ Create a research page on this artist (or do it directly onto your website). Task 5: Photoshoot in the style of Bruce Boyd
|
Watch the videos first. I made the first one quickly for you to show you how to set up your photoshoot.
|
Some preparation is required with this task!
Get a tray or plastic box (takeaway boxes are good for this!) and fill it with water. Collect some flowers/leaves/other nature and place them in the water. Arrange them creatively. Put this in the freezer over night, ready to take photos tomorrow.
You might also want to take some photos at this stage to document the process and how you set up the photoshoot.
GOING FOR GOLD: If you are aiming for the higher grades, do more than one of these - put a few in the freezer so that you have multiple options for photographs.

Take your photos
Take your tray out of the freezer when it is frozen, and wait a while until you can pop the massive ice cube out of the tray. You could use warm water on the bottom of the tray to speed up this process!
Other things you could try: - add food colouring or ink to your icecube (After taking your first photos) and photograph it on the ice - add colouring to the water before you freeze it - try other objects frozen in the water. Aim for 20 photographs - upload them to a gallery below your research. |
Task 6: Editing your photos
Using photoshop (via medhurst or the photoshop link you have been emailed - or any other editing software you have access to):
Edit TWO or more of your best photographs to enhance them in the style of your artist.
Upload your photos - full size - under your photoshoot.
Add a sentence below to explain HOW you did your photoshoot, how you edited your photos, and then explain the strengths and weaknesses. What is good? What could you do better and how?

- Increase the brightness and contrast
- Clear the background so it is simple like the artist does

Moving on to Combining the styles of Saroff and Boyd
For this task you need to combine the styles of the two photographers we have looked at so far.
You will try multiple ways of doing this, but for now choose one of the ideas below for your next photoshoot then plan it out.
You will try multiple ways of doing this, but for now choose one of the ideas below for your next photoshoot then plan it out.
Ideas for your photoshoot to help with planning
Take photos of nature or food through large ice cubes (fill a plastic box of water then freeze, and run under warm water to loosen and get it out for the photoshoot!)
Arrange food in ice trays instead of nature. This could be whole foods or slices. Thin slices of oranges or strawberries could look great! Repeat the first photoshoot with the glasses, but this time put ice cubes inside to distort the food behind even further. Repeat the first photoshoot, but this time put nature behind glasses instead of food. Find some flowers or plants with interesting shapes or colours to make great photos. Remember to move them around throughout the photoshoot for a good variety of photos. Freeze food or nature in ice cubes then photograph an arrangement of them. |
Task 7: Photoshoot plan
Plan a photoshoot to combine your two artists, using the above to give you some ideas (either draw/write by hand then take a photo and upload, or work on powerpoint or straight onto weebly - whatever you prefer) On the photoshoot plan, please include: - What you will photograph and how - How your photoshoot will link to BOTH photographers - Drawings (if possible) of composition (photo) ideas. |
For example - the above features rough hand drawn ideas, with clear notes about techniques for the photoshoot. Something like this is fine!
|
Task 8: Photoshoot
Take 20-30 photographs, working from your plan from task 7. If you are going for gold, then take as many as you wish! Variety is key - vary what is in the photograph, how you arrange the things in front of the camera, the background and lighting etc.
Upload them into a gallery under your photoshoot plan, under the title 'Combining the styles of Saroff and Boyd' on your Distortion page. Write a couple of sentences above the photoshoot to explain how you took your photos, how they link to your artists and the strengths and weaknesses. Feel free to copy and paste these sentence starters if it helps you! |
To take these photos I...
They combined the styles of my two artists by... Something that I am please with is... I could develop... by... |
Task 9: Editing your combined photos
If you have taken effective photos, you shouldn't need to do too much editing!
Edit at least two of your photos, using some of the following techniques: - simplify the background - smooth it out to be one colour (follow a youtube video if you are unsure how to do this effectively!) - enhance the brightness and contrast - crop your photo to make sure the composition is effective. - Rotate the photo a little if it looks wonky! - other?? Upload your edited photos full size to your website under the title 'Editing my combined photos' |
Task 10: Another combined photoshoot
Demonstrate a different method of combining your two artists styles through another photoshoot. Review what worked well with your last photoshoot and add to it/adapt it to be even better! Look again at the list above for task 8 if you need some ideas.
Take 20 or more photos then upload them to a gallery on your website under the title 'Additional Combined Photoshoot'.
Write a sentence below the photoshoot to say how you have developed your ideas from the previous photoshoot, and how you have linked to your two artists.

Task 12: Maurice Scheltens research
Look at the work of Scheltens and Abbenes below. This time you are not asked to research them, just look at their work and write an analysis using the prompt questions below. Write your answers as a paragraph, and upload to your website with copies of these 3 photos under the title 'Artist research: Looking at Scheltens and Abbenes for their use of mirrors'.
there are sentence starters in blue if you need help getting started - just copy and paste them!

Task 13: Scheltens and Abbenes Photoshoot
For this task you will need to find a collection of objects and a mirror or two. I'm sure parents wont mind if you ask to take a mirror off the wall briefly! the best mirrors will be ones without a frame if you have one.
When choosing your objects, you will need 5+ of the same thing. Eg. 5 pairs of shoes, 5 watches, 5 tins of food, 5 daffodils Arrange a set of objects together in a similar way to the photos you have researched by Scheltens and Abbenes. Try to use a plain background and bright lighting in the room. Lay a mirror next to them and take photos, then move the mirror and objects around to try different compositions. If you are able to use two mirrors this could be a good development. Top tip: Make sure you dont capture anything else in the mirror when you take your photo - you will need to angle your camera cleverly. Take 20+ photos then upload to a gallery on your page under a title 'Photoshoot using mirrors in the style of Scheltens and Abbenes' and write a sentence to say how you did your photoshoot. |
Task 14: Going for Gold
This task should be completed by all students, but is an opportunity to think outside of the box therefore could lead to some of the higher marks if you are creative with it!
Use one or more of the techniques above to photograph ANYTHING as long as it is distorted (no longer looks normal).
Options:
1. Use water (in glasses/bottles/tubs/other?) in any way to distort any object of your choice.
2. Use ice (freeze objects, look through ice, use coloured water etc?) in any way to distort any object of your choice.
3. Use mirrors (large, small, more than one mirror, magnifying mirrors etc) in any way to distort any object of your choice.
Objects could be:
- food
- nature
- clothing
- shoes
- household objects
- people
- printed photos
- bottles
- other?

Take 20+ Photos then upload them into a gallery at the bottom of your distortion page.
Edit them if you can - choose two or more to edit and enhance as best you can. Don't forget that it's ok to use apps on your phone such as instagram whilst we don't have access to photoshop!
Upload your edits in two image blocks under your gallery.
